MASTER CLASSES:
Acting
Shakespeare for Teens - Shakespeare's language provides an
excellent opportunity for young actors to explore the art of performance through
monologue and scene work. This course is a comprehensive look at the art of
developing a character through movement technique, vocal development and text
work. Students will use an edited text of one of the plays from
Shakespeare's canon.
Voice And Speech For Teens
- As unique as individual personality,
the voice is one of our chief means of connecting with the outside world by
expressing a wide array of emotion, mood and subtlety of thought. However, for
young adults the efficiency of the natural voice is often diminished through
tensions, defenses and inhibitions. Appropriate and beneficial for both
performers and non-performers, this class seeks to free, strengthen and develop
the voice through a series of exercises--first aimed at solely the human
instrument, then the human actor's instrument. Topics will include support,
resonance, flexibility and articulation. Getting inside words to release their
energy and excitement for an audience will be emphasized.
The Meisner Approach -
Based on the work of
legendary acting teacher Sanford Meisner, this class focuses on learning to
create "real and truthful behavior under imaginary circumstances" through the
"reality of doing." Students will learn exercises in Repetition, preparation,
improvisation, using the magic "as if," and creating a character, in development
of a final scene.

Performance Skills for Lawyers
-
Developed for The
Shakespeare Theatre
Besides performing
on stage, Diana's passion is teaching lawyers how to be more persuasive, using
the techniques of professional actors. Her knowledge of the legal arena accrues
from first-hand work experience at various law firms and hours of courtroom
observation. In addition, she spent several years in New York City working with
Citibank's trainers in corporate communications and presentation skills.
Diana's combination of acting, teaching, and legal expertise make her uniquely
suited to teach this eagerly anticipated addition to The Shakespeare Theatre's
repertoire of classes.
Course Description:
Ultimately, the goal
of the lawyer is to tell a story that will persuade an audience of twelve
jurors. And while law schools may do an excellent job teaching the rules and
procedures of law, they are not inclined to train lawyers in the intricacies of
story-telling and the nuances of verbal and non-verbal communication. This is
the province of the performing artist.
This course teaches
lawyers how to become more persuasive through the study of techniques used by
actors, writers, and directors. This is not a class on courtroom histrionics,
dramatic gestures, and false behavior. On the contrary, this class focuses on
stripping away artifice and developing a natural style with maximum
expressiveness. Using exercises and simulations in a safe and relaxed
atmosphere, learn how to use the body and voice more effectively, whether
speaking to a client, a judge, or a jury.
The emphasis of this
course is on learning by doing. The instructor alternates lecture with
demonstration and provides ample opportunities for participants to "rehearse"
technique. The goal is to offer skills that can be learned, used and applied to
actual on-going case work.
During the six-week
course, participants will have the opportunity to develop, refine and rehearse
one current or previous opening/closing statement.
One need not be born
with the spell-binding eloquence of Clarence Darrow to work magic in the
courtroom. The art of persuasion can be taught.
